How every character unlocks

Heroes arrive through three paths: automatic story recruitment, Fate's Invitation exchange, and Hero Quests (character arcs that grant tickets plus exclusive Karma). Hidden exploration and regional side quests can also recruit allies off the main road.

Fate's Invitation exchange

Complete the prologue for your first ticket (~15 minutes). Each subsequent story chapter grants another. Spend tickets in Exchange — no preview in-game, so use this page to plan before committing. Tickets from Hero Quests work identically.

All 19 launch heroes — master table

The master table is the fastest DragonSword Awakening characters reference. Scan Role and Status Ailment columns when building a squad, then check Unlock before farming tickets.

Story & starter heroes

The prologue introduces the mercenary band that carries the narrative. These heroes need no tickets and teach core tag-team mechanics before you spend Fate's Invitations.

Lute — protagonist

Lute is the Dragon Sword candidate — a traveling boy swept into mercenary life with Johnny and Castella. His kit revolves around Bleed stacking for sustained boss damage. Dedicated Karma can pivot him toward healer/support roles without changing heroes.

Castella & Johnny — tutorial pair

Castella groups enemies and holds space with axe spins; Johnny converts that setup into airborne juggles. Together with Lute, they form the story's default trio before exchange picks expand coverage.

Fate's Invitation exchange roster

Eleven heroes sit behind the Exchange menu. None are stronger because they cost tickets — pick based on ailment gaps in your squad. Multi-ailment heroes enable the most Signal Skill routes.

High-priority first tickets

Charlotte applies Poison, Airborne, and Knockdown — the widest Signal Skill coverage. Raina is the premier juggle starter. Donna offers a unique summon loop with Chako for players who want Frost control without manual aim. Alex is the forgiving tank if you struggle with Break timing.

Specialist picks

Scion and Tart excel in Shock teams but need synergy partners. Astria lacks ailment application — viable as a secondary ranged slot but weaker for Signal Skill-focused comps. Eileen and Kalin sit in the flexible mid-tier: strong when you commit to Airborne or Burn routes respectively.

Hero Quest & regional allies

Hero Quests are optional character storylines unlocked mid-campaign. Completing them grants a Fate's Invitation ticket (if needed) plus exclusive Karma for that hero. Dismantle unwanted Karma to redirect currency toward another hero's gear.

Theresia — flail bleed DPSTheresiaDPS / CCBleed · StunAlso in Exchange — Hero Quest grants Karma

Ornette — shield frontline

Ornette absorbs boss strikes with shields and applies heavy Knockdown for downed damage multipliers. Pair with Castella or Alex for double-frontline stability, then swap to Lute or Charlotte for burst while Ornette holds aggro.

Othello — knockdown bruiser

Othello is a small-stature heavy attacker featured in launch trailers. His Knockdown focus fills a roster gap for down-state Signal Skills. Hero Quest completion is recommended before pushing Tower of Trials.

Building around your roster

Effective teams cover three jobs: applicator (applies Status Ailments), finisher (Signal Skills and airborne extension), and flex (Break, grab, or shields). Field only three at a time — the other 16 sit on bench for swap chains, not passive buffs.
